Seniors Health
At Dunn Bay Surgery our team of medical practitioners are committed to helping seniors maintain their active and healthy lifestyle, ensuring that patients understand what to expect with aging. We offer annual Health Assessments for those aged 75 years and over and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Health Assessments are performed by one of our Practice Nurses and then reviewed by your Doctor. The assessment represents an opportunity to consider areas of your health that may not have recently been covered during routine medical appointments. They allow us to identify any existing or potential health issues, so that you can make more informed decisions about your health. The focus of Health Assessments is preventative care – solving problems before they happen, and identifying things that can be done to help you live a better life for as long as possible. Most health assessments take between 20-40 minutes and involve a number of questions relating to your general health, as well as a series of simple tests. These may include: •Vision check •Hearing check •Bowel Scan •Spirometry Testing-Recording •Wound Dressings •Urine sample •Blood pressure check •Review of current medications •Height and weight measurements

Skin Care, Cancer Checks & Surgery
At Dunn Bay Surgery our doctors have undergone additional training and utilise photo dermoscopy to ensure early and accurate detection of skin cancer. Early detection generally gives the best chance of successfully treating skin cancer. Australian survival rates from melanoma are higher than in other countries because of awareness of the signs of skin cancer and early detection procedures.
The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement or even death. We can help you understand your personal risk factors such as: •Sun exposure •Family history •Adverse lifestyle factors We use very high quality powerful dermoscopes to check your skin for suspicious spots – sun damaged skin, melanoma, benign skin lesions etc. and we advise on how to prevent skin cancers by life style changes. We can treat some early skin cancers and pre-cancer skin lesions at the surgery, and we ensure thorough and appropriate follow-up care. Skin lesions which cannot be managed in general practice will be referred to a dermatologist or skin cancer clinic for further management.
Mental Health
All our doctors are experienced in recognising early signs of mental illness to ensure early treatment. Common mental illnesses include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.
We offer help and treatment in the form of counselling, mindfulness, prescribed medications, and referral onto psychologists.
Heart Health Check
A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up with your GP to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Heart Health Checks can detect issues with your heart health. Coronary heart disease is usually the underlying cause of a heart attack, which is Australia’s number one cause of death. Coronary heart disease is caused when the arteries leading to the heart become hardened or narrow.
Anyone 45 years and over or 30 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should have a regular Heart Health Check with their doctor.
Medical Grade Acupuncture
Sometimes referred to as intramuscular stimulation or myofascial trigger point needling, dry needling is mainly used to treat trigger points, as well as being useful in the treatment of neural or muscular injuries. It is commonly confused with acupuncture; however dry needling only targets the local area of pain, whereas acupuncture purports to treats a wide range of health conditions.
The main goal of using dry needling treatment is to restore correct muscle function and accelerate pain reduction. Muscle tension can affect the complex electrical and chemical communications that occur in the nervous system. If a trigger point forms within a muscle, these messages are interfered with and the transmission of pain signals and pain-relieving chemicals is inhibited.
